How does ISWN relate to the UN/SPSC code? (top)
The Universal Standard Products and Services Classification (UNSPSC)is a code used to classify goods and services. The UNSPSC code provides a standard index classification for electronic catalogs and standard account codes for performing in depth Spend Analysis. Its main application lies in eBusiness, more specifically electronic procurement, where it used alongside other universal product classification schemes such as eCl@ass.
The UN/SPSC code stops at the level where it specifies a class of products 'Wine' by the numerical code 502020. The ISWN code can be seen as an extension below this level, to specify wines from a certain country of origin (by ISO code), and so on to the producer level (ISWN-P) and below.
Below is an extract of the UN/SPSC hierarchy and codes, relevant for the wine industry.
